A Snowy Afternoon

I appologize from the start for the poor quality of these shots

Winter is here. The snows have come, gone, and are due to be here again.

The sheep are all wearing their winter's best and look so warm and fluffy in the fields or taking a peek around the barn.

This past week was just a wonder of snow and a promise of spring to come. I saw birds in the trees which are usually bare, and was even blessed one morning with song!

I know that the infamous "THEY" are forecasting more snow this week. But I also know what THEY may not!We are now in February. Ha!! Next month is March and according to Punxsutawney Phil Spring will be here early Folks!

So dust off those spring time thoughts, and break out your seed trays. Go on out and buy your seeds to start indoors.

I, for one, am going to ignore these last bits of winter that is going to get thrown at us. I am going to fight it all with Vitamin D, raw milk, raw foods, and good, healthy, living! Join me, I always hate to be alone.

How about starting with some eggs cooked to perfection, followed with some Buckwheat pancakes (a recipe is on the bag!) Slather each pancake with some delish perserves, and add a side of bacon or sausage! Don't forget that tall, cold glass of milk...

We've been loading our freezers with fresh FRESH beef just for you! All of our beef is pasture fed- no grain! It's true Red Meat and oh-so-very-healthy for you. Have You Any Wool?

Our sheep are a Jacob/Romeny cross and look so very fluffly during this time of year. I always enjoy seeing them gathered together in the fields while they eat, or just look cute.

Many of you might not know that we harvest our own wool and sell it right in the Farm Shop.

This wool felts very well and is a great all purpose worsted weight wool. It looks so scrumptious on it's own, or is a great wool for your dyeing projects. And what a great way to support local farming and business in one go!!

Have you taken time to look around the Farm Shop recently? Well, consider this your personal invitation to take a walk by the shelves. With snow-bound weather on the way, maybe learning a new craft (or picking up an old one) is just what you need to keep sanity close. ;-)

Speaking of sheep and being snow bound:
We not only raise these sheep for wool , but also for their Oh-So-Nutritious meat!

Health Benefits Of Eating Lamb

Lamb is a good source of high quality protein and supplies the body with 60.3% of the daily requirement for protein.
The meat is a good source of selenium, a mineral whose deficiency can lead to asthma attacks.
Lamb is rich in iron, which is an integral component of hemoglobin and aids formation of red blood cells in the body. The form in which iron is present in lamb is easily absorbed by the body.
The meat contains a high amount of zinc, which is required by every living cell in the body for healthy immune function, cell division and overall growth.

Thought we'd write a post with some of the highlights from the past year.

2010 was a year that brought some major snow. .. and C~O~L~D temperatures with it!

Here the Farmer's Daughter is helping with the livestock. As a matter of fact, if it weren't for the family all pitching in to help, the snow might never have been moved at all....

But spring finally came around, as it does every year, and we began with all of the excitement and vigor a severe winter seems to give. Our very first post for this blog was all about spring, and you can read all about it HERE.

Along with our classes, we had many posts about Making Butter, Raw Milk Information, and some great Farm Recipes.

There were some silly Farm Life Stories (and another one) that came our way, not to mention one very HUGE storm!

2010 was a year filled with lots of growth. Not only did we have many new arrivals, but we also opened the General Mercantile down at the Farm Shop, and built a Green House for this winter.

I think, one of the biggest things to happen here was our introduction of classes! We started with a bang when we introduced you to Cheese Making, and then had some Knitting Classes, and yet another Cheese Class. We have such a grand time at these events getting to know you better while sharing knowledge of a healthier lifestyle. We are very much looking forward to expanding our classes in 2011.

Alright, what started out as a Top 10 has morphed into a Top 12, but can you blame me? So much happened worth sharing that I just couldn't keep it down to 10. =)

Christmas has come and gone, another year is coming to and end, and life still goes on here on the farm. Our Jersey Girls all still need to be milked each day, the chickens need to be cared for along with the rabbits, and trhe list gones on. Even Christmas is no vacation. But we'd have it no other way. =)

We hope that each of you had a blessed Christmas and may your New Year be one of growth and health.

With the beginning of winter this coming week, and snow already established, it looks as if it's going to be another snow-filled wonderland until spring. Not that there's anything wrong with that though. =/

Here on the farm we've been able to get our wood cut, split, stacked, and some of it burnt. While the fire is truely a delight, since we only heat with our stoves, it makes for C~O~L~D mornings!

Some other "new" happenings around here is our newest Jersey Girl, Jade. She's settled in and doing nicely. We were recenlty sent some pictures of another finished sock from our Sock Making Class back in October. This student has made a stocking ready for Christmas!

We have some fresh lamb on the hoof that will be ready to slaughter at the end of the month. Raw Milk Products Win Again!

Just take a quick look at this article (found at MSN) about some funky butter. Although my Grammy always swore that butter was the best things for a burn, I don't think she meant it would SAVE me from getting burned.

This is one more reason to save your cream each week and make your own butter! We've shared with you before how easy it is to make your own butter right at home. If you don't want to do it our way, you can also just pour your cream right into your blender- it takes at least half the time that way. (I'm just a purist I guess)

It really is so simple and just so darn yummy! The health benefits are wonderfully rich as well

Our Cheese Making 101 class was so very popular the first time we held it (back in the summer) that we are hosting one again! This class has filled up very fast as well, and we only have 3 spots left! Is one of the spaces yours?

In this beginner's class, we will start with basic cheese recipes, such as Rennet Cheese, Chevre' and a basic hard cow's milk cheese. We will also discuss Latin American "White Cheese" and Ricotta. Also, along with cheese, butter, and yogurt. Recipes and sources for cultures, enzymes, molds, and molds (yes even the yucky looking green stuff!) will be distributed.

Have you seen the weather forecast for the next week? Brrrr- down into the 40's each night! Do you have any wood split, stacked, and stocked yet? How many of you heat with wood? Here on The Farm we heat only with wood stoves- 3 to be exact.

What do you like to feed your loved ones during the cold seasons of the year? This past week we have had great success with some rabbit meat grown right here at Pine Grove Farm. This recipe takes such a small amount of work, and yields such a healthy, filling, yummy meal that we want to share it with all of you.

Slow Roasted Rabbit

Slice 2 onions and place in bottom of slow cooker
rub salt & pepper (to taste) onto 3-5 lb rabbit
place 1-2 sliced garlic cloves into the cavity
set rabbit on top of onion inside cooker
add 3 bay leaves
1 whole clove
1cup hot water
2 tbs soy
2-4 tbsp bacon grease, butter, or even bacon slices (yum)
Cover and set on LOW for 10-12 hrs

When you return from your busy day, your home will be filled with the pleasing aroma of dinner! You can even remove the rabbit, add a few tablespoons of flour (or corn starch, or arrow root powder) into 1/2 cup water, mix, then pour into cooker for a wonderfully healthy-tasty gravy!

Don't forget to add a veg to the side!

~Cheese Making 101~

Do you remember our first Cheese Making class? It was so popular that we ran out of space! We promised you then that there would be a second class for all those who happened to miss the first.

Well, this is it! Just like the first class, this one is also offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Space is limited so you will want to reserve you spot early. ($20 due @ time of registration) The class will be held on November 6 from 1pm-3pm. (The remaining $20 is due at time of class)

Here's some info from the first class:

--- Making Cheese on your own can seem daunting, but only until you learn a few easy steps. Nature intended milk to convert to cheese for longer storage, and all you have to do is learn to understand and guide the process so that you can end up with the type of cheese you desire.

We are mere weeks away from the Shenandoah Fiber Festival! This year we thought we'd help with the fiber-love by hosting a Learn To Knit Class. This introductory class will teach you the basics of knitting:

The different types of yarn & their uses
The different types of needles
how to cast on
The 2 basic stitches (knit & purl)
How to cast off

There will also be different knitted garments on display to inspire you!

Learn To Knit will be held on the opening day of the Fiber Fest and will finish in time for you to venture out and experience all the Fest has to offer! Or, if you'd rather, you can choose to attend our Learn To Knit on Saturday and then enjoy Shenandoah Fiber Fest all day on Sunday!

Space is very limited due to time constraints so register early!

Can't Wait For Tomorrow!

We are really excited about tomorrow! Our Cheese Making 101 is not only the first class we've offered, but also has turned out to be the very well attended. If there are any of you who still might want to attend, just drop us a line! We'll be sure to take photos and post them here.

This is the first of many classes that we are going to be having here at Pine Grove Farm, so stay tuned!

Update Policies

We hope that this letter finds everyone doing well and enjoying their summer. This letter is to inform you of some important changes to the farm's policies. We have had to change certain aspects of the policies due to the growing number of customers we have visiting the farm on a daily basis. These new policies will be implemented immediately and we ask that you observe these new policies on all future visits to the farm in order to keep the farm safe and enjoyable for everyone.

The farm has changed the hours of operation to 9am - 7pm Monday - Saturday and 12pm - 4pm on Sunday. The driveway is gated and the farm will only be accessible during the farm's hours of operation. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. If you need to make a pick-up after closing, we ask that you make prior arrangements at least 24 hours in advance. In addition, if you call the farm after hours, please leave a message and your call will be returned the following day.
Please observe the 10mph speed limit and keeps vehicles on the driveway. This helps Mr. Wisecarver to maintain the road & ditches for water control, and helps keep the dust down. The farm is providing a safe place- sometimes there are children walking in the driveway. Please keep in mind that we have several animals that are not fenced in and have access to the driveway that we do not wish to be hit.
We ask that you keep your children with you at arms length at all times. This is to ensure their safety. We have many pieces of farm equipment out in the open that pose a possible threat to their safety and we are finding that some of the pieces of equipment are missing important parts. We also have a variety of animals and some of these animals do not cope very well with strangers. Contact with strangers negatively affects their health. We depend on our animals as a source of income and we don't want their health affected. While in the farm shop, we ask that you not allow your little ones to touch the times we have on consignment from other businesses. This will help to ensure that the farm will not have to pay for any damages.
Everyone, when signing for the Cow Share Program, was given 3 sets of milk jars per share. This is to ensure that there is a set of jars per share at the farm every week. We are currently having a problem with jars not being returned, and missing lids on returned jars. If lids are not on the jars, there is always a possibility of dirt and contamination prior to filling the jar with milk .In the past, Pine Grove Farm has supplied extra jars to the Cow Share Owner when the owners have not returned their weekly jars. We have done so in order that the full quantity of the share can be filled for the Cow Share Owner the following week. We will no longer be able to provide this free service of the extra, free, jars due to the increase of cost. Pine Grove Farm will only fill the jars returned for the following week, unless the share owner continues to have their 3rd set of jars here at the farm. The third set is to ensure that, if the jars are not returned for that week, the following week your share will be filled per the contract. Every Cow Share Owner should have an extra set of jars here at the farm per share at all times.

We understand that there are many exciting things to see here at the farm, but we ask that you respect our time as we are very busy here everyday and rarely have a moment to spare. We don't want to offend anyone, or come across as being rude, so we are in the process of finalizing a calendar of events with specific days that well allow you and your family to spend some times here at the farm and get to know us and our farm hands better. We are not trying to ignore anyone; we are just extremely busy trying to make Pine Grove Farm more productive.

Please keep your eyes open for the calendar of events and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call. We appreciate your understanding and compliance with the new policies.

Although we never quite felt the need to run for the storm cellar, (and we never did see that woman flying by on a bike.. . ) , the storm that hit our area last week was freakish to say the least, and reminded us all of the fact that God is on His throne and in control, to say the most.

Storm warnings went out on the radio and telly. But that is something we get a few times a season, so no big worry there. The Farmer was working on his Loader down near the creek bottom and the Farmer's Wife was in the house.

The storm hit. It was the strangest storm in our memory. First the rain would come in from the left and hit the windows, then it would swirl around and come in from the right, THEN it would change direction once again and hit us straight on. Some parts in the area look as if a tornado touched down, ripped up the trees, and went away. Once things began to look dangerous, the Farmer's Wife thought it'd be most prudent to position herself in the most structurally sound area of the house. She figured SURELY The Farmer would be coming in any minute. He didn't.

The Farmer was in the creek bottom. It has very narrow, steep walls and most of the storm was going right over his head. He was just working away on the loader.
The Wife calls the Farmer on his cell "Are you alright???"
"What do you mean, 'am I alright?' " he asks

Just at about that point the storm hit him. Hard. He immediately lifted the tracks off of the ground so that he'd stop being a conductor. (That whole lightening thing) Once that was done, he still had to wait out the storm because he was under the trees and debris was falling all over and on top of the loader. Large branches were falling from trees and some of our oldest trees snapped right off near the base.

Once the storm appeared to be letting up. The Farmer decided to make a run for the house. He didn't get far. When he was in the open field, the Storm came back with all of it's ferocity. He made a bee line to the barn, and there he waited out the rest of the Storm. At least there, he was in view of the house and The Wife could see he was, indeed, safe.

In the quiet of the Storm's passing, we realized it was TOO quiet. You know, the kind of no-electrical-motors-running kind of quiet. Yup, you guessed it. We were without power.
For NINE hours.
We lost over 35 gallons of milk along with everything else.
But.
On the good side? We have some of the best cow share holders who were all very understanding and concerned. Everyone was quite understanding to the problem.

These next ones all happened to the same tree, right where most of our animals either live, or are worked. This tree just split in areas and dropped a few large limbs

~Cheese Making 101 part 2~

It is our pleasure to RE-announce our Cheese Making 101! The new date for the class is Aug. 7. from 10-12. Now, due to the overwhelming response and interest in this class, we are offering it on a first-come-first-served basis. Space is limited, so sign up early. ($15 deposit due @ registration) The price is still $35 (this means remaining $20 due day of class)

Interest is SO large for this class, that we are working now to get the next class scheduled with the teacher. However, because we don't know when this will be, you shouldn't Provolone signing up for this class. (Sorry, couldn't help myself)

So, Saturday begins with chores- just like any other farm day. But then we get a call from Sis up in Michigan. It appears that a friend's son from her church is in need of some help. Can we possibly give it to him?

It appears that Ben's bike is having some mechanical problems and we are the closest folk with the ability to help. So The Farmer hops into his truck at 9:30 pm and drives out to Jefferson, MD where Ben is stranded. Together they loaded the bike and all of his gear into the truck and drive back to the Farm. Ben sleeps here and it is so wondreful to be able to share what we have with him. It's amazing how God brings us all together in times of need.

Sunday morning dawns and the Farmer and Ben drive into Winchester. They take the bike and Ben into Element Sports to see about getting the bike fixed. The folk there are so much more than helpful, going over every inch of Ben's bike plus fixing the broken small gear thingy for a very nominal fee.

After the bike is fixed, the Farmer returns Ben to Jefferson, MD. so that he can resume his trek across America.

Good luck, Ben. Our prayers are with you.

Cheese accept our apolocheese.
Our much anticipated Cheese Making 101 class has been Provoloned.

Back in the late 1800's, Fromage when the farm house was being built, I doubt there was much interest in electricity.But our wiring is old and sometimes life intervenes. How wonderful it would be if, when things did happen around here, we could fix them immediately....

So our Cheese Class is being set back, and as soon as we get things up and running here in the kitchen again, we'll give everyone advanced notice. There's Stilton's of interest for this class so much so that all of you couldn't fit into one time slot. (How wonderful is that?!!?) So if our new date (when we get it) isn't Gouda for your schedule, we'll be able to put you in the following class. After all, everyone will then be able to make their own cheese and Edam up!

Ok, OK, I think I've milked this cheese-pun thing for long enough now..seriously, I'm Feta up..

And We're Not Just Talkin' Turkey!

Ahhh, Spring is in the air and we turn to love. Love comes in many forms. Romeo and Juliet. Bonny & Clyde. Sampson & Delilah.
Christmas & Thanksgiving.

Yup, ya got that right: Christmas & Thanksgiving. Our 2 new start crossed lovers at Pine Grove Farm .

These turkeys were gifts from a very generous Cow Share Holder. They were brought in this week and have already set up "house". Christmas has even laid her first egg!

Alas and alack: as with all good love stories, ours comes with it's own bit of drama. You see,they arrived last Friday afternoon and were soon strutting around the farm yard acting as turkeys will act. Thanksgiving likes to show off his manliness, and true to form, was all puffed up with nowhere to go. Christmas was just a bit more curious about her new home , and thought she'd take a stroll.

By late Saturday afternoon, she had seen the whole yard and was bored. So Christmas walked,

and walked,

and walked, and walked.

And the Farm Family looked, and looked, and looked, and looked. We'd not wanted Christmas to come that badly since we were kids! But no Christmas, and it was getting too dark to see. The search for Christmas had to be put off until morning. *sigh*

On Sunday Christmas still hadn't come. And, by now, Thanksgiving was feeling the loss of his lady.

He moped around the yard, seeking his love.

Then comes Monday. The Farmer's Daughter gets a call from a childhood friend, "Do you know anything about turkeys?" This friend asked.
"Yeesss,"she answered sheepishly
"Well, my Grandparents have this turkey that showed up the other day....."

In her desire to see the grass on the other side, our Christmas crossed the creek (Turkey Run, how apropos), and meandered over 1/4 mile to Grandma's House.

Well, she was returned to her Thanksgiving as soon as possible.

So when you visit us, remember our new love birds and remember that Thanksgiving likes to impress with his plumage. He's just a big softy at heart

1/2 A Day In The Life

What do we do all day here on the Farm? We thought you'd never ask! (But since we didn't have the camera around during the morning work, we can only show you 1/2 of it! heehee)

We finally were able to finish the green house! Can't wait to see what a difference this will make in our veg production this year...

The Farmer's Daughter helped to put in a small portion of our pepper plants. This is just one of our raised beds:

We've been working to clear the site of the Old Woolen Mill here on the Farm in order to build it up as a barn. With the Farmer's wonderful excavation work, we're now able to see how much work we have left to do. It's great to see a dream take shape!

--- Making Cheese on your own can seem daunting, but only until you learn a few easy steps. Nature intended milk to convert to cheese for longer storage, and all you have to do is learn to understand and guide the process so that you can end up with the type of cheese you desire.

In this beginner's class, we will start with basic cheese recipes, such as Rennet Cheese, Chevre' and a basic hard cow's milk cheese. We will also discuss Latin American "White Cheese" and Ricotta. Also, along with cheese, butter, and yogurt. Recipes and sources for cultures, enzymes, molds, and molds (yes even the yucky looking green stuff!) will be distributed.

Shearing The Sheep

We were so happy to see a good turnout today for our Sheep Shearing Day! Even with the clouds dropping their rain on us, we still had a fun time meeting with you, and sharing what we do here on the Farm. (We're equally happy that no one complained when forced to step in our very own Farm Poop!)

Here are some very patient folks lined up watching the first sheep to be sheared...

After the first sheep was done, the rain began. This meant that we all trooped into the barn to insure we stayed dry. We each stayed dry, and got a very up-close look at the entire shearing process. (We also had a great view of a curious cow, and the Llama latrine.)

Some of the sheep didn't particularly want to be sheared though....

Thanks, again, to everyone who came to learn more about the Farm. Those of you who did were the first to hear about our upcoming classes. Although we don't have a calendar yet, we will be having classes this summer and into the fall. Just keep an eye out for info here, on our Facebook Page, or in the Farm Shop!

Grand Opening!

After much preparation, planning, and perspiration Pine Grove Farm is more than happy to announce the opening of our very own General Mercantile down in the Farm Shop! This has been one of our long range plans for the Shop for quite some time.

In the Mercantile we offer things such as Farm-Yard dirt, yarn, and wool roving. You will now ,also, find pieces of hand fashioned craftsmanship. Each of these pieces are traditional, American, handicraft produced locally by Friends of Pine Grove Farm.

Our goal is to eventually bring to market all, or most, of the Time-Honored Goods which you would have found in Great-Grandma's Pantry. Things such as Hand-Made Soaps, Hand-Woven Rugs, Knitted Items, Pottery, and Wooden furniture. We are not there yet, and may never be without your help in some very important areas.

In order to insure the safety and integrity of the Farm Shop, it's goods, and of you dear Farm Friends, it is necessary for each of us to respect and care for these consignment items. On your trips to the Farm Shop, you will see ever-increasing amounts of items upon the shelves. Some of these are on consignment (you'll see the tags marked clearly) and some of these are display antiques owned by the Farmer and the Farmer's Wife. While in the Shop, please be aware that some of these items can be easily broken, and require "kid gloves". Therefore, please take a few moments to make certain that all young hands are being held in larger hands while visiting the Shop. This will help to keep the integrity of our relationship with all of our Farm Friends who have invested so much of themselves into their products.

There is one, final way, in which all of you can help us here at the Farm. Tell all of your friends about us and what we have to offer here. Call the Farmer's Wife and set up a time for you to bring some friends to meet her. Realize that each and every one of you plays such an important part in our lives, and we love to offer these services (and more to come!!) to all of you.

The Health Benefits Of Raw Milk
From Grass-Fed Animals

In 1970, I went to live on the island of Martha's Vineyard. I was quite ill with gastrointestinal problems. I began living mostly on seafood, fresh vegetables and salads, and raw milk and eggs purchased from a local farmer, with a little meat and whole grain bread. My health problems, which had been intractable for years, disappeared.
Raw milk remained a mainstay of my diet. Since 1981 I have strongly recommended raw milk to thousands of people who have seen me in my practice as a naturopathic physician. I practice in Connecticut, where we enjoy the right to purchase certified raw milk throughout the state (with the exception of the town of Fairfield, where a fascist local health board has instituted an unchallenged-for-lack-of-funds town ordinance prohibiting the sale of raw milk.)
The raw milk available in the part of Connecticut where I live is from Debra Tyler's farm in Cornwall Bridge, called "Local Farm." Debra has nine cows on fourteen acres. Eight health food stores in central and northern Connecticut pick up milk regularly at Local Farm. There are about a dozen other certified raw milk dairies among Connecticut's 210 dairy farms.
Debra has Jersey cows. Most farms have Holsteins, which provide large quantities of milk, but milk that is lower in protein, fat and calcium. Jerseys were originally bred by the French to produce milk for cheese making. The fat content of Debra's milk during the warm months is about 4.8 percent, well above the normal 3.5 percent for whole milk. Debra's cows eat mostly grass in the spring, summer and fall, and mostly hay in the winter (each cow consumes a forty pound bale a day!), with a few pounds a day of ground corn and roasted soybeans (five to one corn to soybeans ratio).
Local Farm milk is certified organic. Certification costs several hundred dollars a year in fees and considerable paperwork. It also means that Debra must sometimes pay more for certified feed from faraway places than for locally produced feed she knows to be organic but which is not certified. This raises the question-if you know and trust the local farmers who produce your food, does it really have to be certified?

We have received a few questions about buttermilk lately.

Although we make farm-fresh butter available to our cow-share holders, learning to create a traditional food is always empowering. To that end, we want to share some very informative links to help you educate your self and your family on butter, cultured buttermilk (what is found in the stores) , and old-fashioned buttermilk.

It was my intention to write this article by myself. However, as I researched the web for more information, I was astounded to find all you need with just a few, quick, clicks.

This first link is copyrighted by David B. Fankhauser, Ph.D.,Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College. I found this to be the easiest for me to read and the most informative.

The second link is written in a very easy-to-read format and, in my opinion, is great for those of us with an adventurous 'can-do' spirit.

The Wonders of Wool

This past weekend we were able to sheer sheep. The Shepherd's Ewe was there and she sheered 17 sheep in a day! Each fleece was anywhere from 8-15 pounds. The sheep are either Jacob, Romney, or Jacob/Romney Crosses. ,

( I simply adore lambs!!)

So now the fleece will be sent off and return to us as skeins of yarn (just the stuff to use in our upcoming classes!), roving (for all of you spinners), and sheets of batting for felting projects. The Shepherd's Ewe is also making some raw fleece available upon request. You can contact the Farm for pricing, etc.

We have yarn available in the Farm Shop right now. It is un-dyed 2-ply worsted weight. The average skein is 9 1/2 oz. per skein, but we also have some that are only around 3oz/skein for your smaller projects.

And this brings me right into my next bit of news: Our beginner knitter class! For everyone who wants to learn, or those of you who want an easy refresher, we are hosting a beginner knitting class. We'll be learning to knit a cotton washcloth. This course will teach you how to cast on, some basic knit stitches and the "lingo", and to cast off. The class will be on Saturday May 15 from 10-12 and run for 3 weeks. We'll be offering a farm fresh lunch afterward. Please sign up for the class HERE and to get your list of supplies. A Little Oops, and Making Butter

On the last post we forgot to show you a picture of our almost completed green house! Oops! So here she is, frame and all...

Isn't the door wonderful? We promise to show you the inside as soon as it's done so keep an eye out.

Today was a wonderful day for baking here. The barometer was just right for bread dough, and since the bread tastes so much better when made with fresh buttermilk, I needed to start with my cream.

I'm not sure the reason why, but cream will whip better and just 'work' better when left for 3 days. So after I seperated my cream earlier this week, I let it stay in the fridge for a few days to rest. To begin working it today I poured it into a gallon sized jar because it's gonna need the room. After that I sat down next to my husband and talked while I shook the jar from side to side.

It took about 15 minutes until I had my butter sloshing around in my jar, but there it was! So easy and so very good for you!

I poured the contents through a strainer in order to remove the butter from the buttermilk. After the buttermilk had been set back inthe fridge, I placed my butter onto a chilled plate. (I use enamel ware plates here and they freeze up great!) I then took my small wooden spatula and bagan working out all of the buttermilk under cold water. Flatten and mound, flatten and mound, flatten and mound, rinse, rinse.

When all of the buttermilk was washed away, I added a few pinches of salt and workd it into my butter. Next, it was formed into a ball and that was it! So easy!

Warning: this is so yummy that you may just get too spoiled to use store bought butter on your bread again. =)

Easter Weekend & Some Growing News

This weekend saw some family time for Easter. I love having the kids home and family near. Even with holidays, though, there's always work to do on the farm.

One of the projects we want to share with you is our vegetable and flower garden. Last year we planted some flowers and are really looking forward to expanding that section of the garden. I plan on having flowers to offer you to as soon as they begin blooming. Keep an eye out for them in the Farm Shop. If you look to the side bar here on the blog, you should see a poll we are conducting. Our goal is to provide you with more of want you want. So here's the question: What fresh, garden veggies do you want for your family? If you don't see you favorite listed, don't worry! Just see our complete listing over at Local Harvest. Please leave a comment here so we can be sure to add it to our garden for you.

Have you seen the big hoops in the ground next to the garden? That is the beginning of our greenhouse! Our goal is to be able to provide you with your fresh, garden vegetables for and extended period of time. I'm really happy about this project.

Spring on the Farm

. We are so excited to be starting this spring with so many new ideas and prospects for you and your loved ones.

The coming of spring brings much work here at the farm. With such a severe winter and all of it's snow, we are going to have to restore the pastures from the winter storms. The cows pushed through the saturated sod and have made some damage. The snow, also, created some rut damage as it melted and ran down the pasture hills. So the Farmer will have his work cut out for him there.

In the past week, 2 of our beautiful Girls have calved. Both Bessie and Amber are back to giving milk. Also, our sheep are lambing and we have 3 new little ones running around the pastures. I love lambs.

Not only do we have the lambs, but the rest of the flock are going to be sheered soon! This means some fresh roving, yarn, and batting!

In April our new chicks will hatch here at Pine Grove Farm. They're due to arrive on April 12, which means an increase in our egg production!! Of course, this won't happen until mid-summer, but spring is such a wonderful time for new beginnings.

Another new beginning each spring is our garden. We are planning on offering cut flowers as an addition to our fresh produce this year. At this time we're not certain as to the amount of produce we'll be offering, so please drop us a line and tell us what you'd like to have on your family's table this summer!

So, welcome to Spring here on the farm! We are excited to have you with us and hope that you share us with your friends and family.
